Nunkai is a hidden place in Montanita's northern barrio La Punta. This is the Surf Point, a beautiful forest with eco-chic character hotels and cafes.
Nunkai has a wood/bamboo rustic design, with steep stairs and a feeling of being in a forest. Nunkai means 'From the Soil' in Shuar, an Amazonian nationality with a strong cultural heritage.
Nunkai's hanging sofa right beneath the trees, its hammocks, and (in construction) sea view deck are great places to relax in contact with nature.
La Punta is a 20-minute walk away from the city center, taxi ride 24/7 is US$1.50.
Community/Conservation Travel is a form of Activism, so we're creating a network of communities and social projects worth visiting East of the Ruta del Spondylus, the off-the-beaten-track side of the road.
Nunkai also hosts art exhibits, ceremonies, yoga & surf classes, campfires at dawn, and live music. Nunkai's Cafe serves veggie/seafood, hamburgers/sandwiches with sourdough bread.

Cancellation policy: 24h before arrival. In case of a late cancellation or No Show, you will be charged the first night of your stay.

We really enjoyed our stay with Ricardo and staff - all super helpful and accommodating. Ricardo is an active conservationist which made for great conservation. It's a rustic hostel with a splash of jungle (peaceful/quiet). Some rooms have cool lofts, but requires agility to navigate the stairs. The only negative was a musty smell, but somewhat inherent with the oceanside jungle atmosphere. It is quite affordable considering the proximity to Montañita. We highly recommend a stay at the Nunkai!
